1,700 Ford workers, take early retirement offers

Ford Motor Co. offered an early retirement offer, out of 41,000 factory workers; only 1,700 employees took the company’s package. Factory workers have decided to take the offers and soon to leave the company by June 1.

Skilled trades workers like electricians and plumbers were offered $100,000 to retire while production workforces were offered $50,000.

Marcey Evans, Ford spokeswoman, said that the company won’t replace all the retiring workers. Newly hired workers will be paid around $16 per hour while about 9,000 skilled tradesmen make above $30 per hour.

To help satisfy growing U.S. auto sales, Ford is getting additional workers in Wayne, Michigan, near Detroit; Louisville, Kentucky; Chicago and near Kansas City, Missouri.
