Mac Virus: Apple Computers infected with the Flashback Trojan

Dr. Web, the Russian anti-virus firm, reported that more than 600,000 Apple computer worldwide have been infected with the Flashback Trojan.  The said report “refutes claims by some experts that there are no cyber-threats to Mac OS X”.  Over half of the infected computers are in the US while nearly 20% are in Canada.

The trojan, disguised as an Adobe Flash Update, began circulating in September.  After the ‘update’, the hackers could gain control of the computer as the virus disables some security features.  Newer versions of the malware also took advantage of the weaknesses of the Java language used for web pages by installing codes to infect the computer.

Apple has released this week a security patch for its users to download for protection against this trojan.  Those who haven’t downloaded it yet remain exposed.

Timur Tsoriev, Kaspersky Lab analyst in Russia told BBC, “People used to say that Apple computers, unlike Windows PCs, can’t ever be infected – but it’s a myth”.
