Canadian Encyclopedia:

“Others may appear green, brown or black, or combinations of these colors. These icebergs have usually rolled over, exposing basal ice, or have emerged from below water level. The various colorations are caused by differences in density, air-bubble content and impurities. For example, black ice is of high density and bubble free; dark layers indicate the presence of rock materials derived from the base of the parent glacier. Occasionally, rocks may be found on the original upper surface of the iceberg. As the iceberg melts, these materials precipitate into marine or lake sediments.”

It is known that most icebergs are white but sometimes it is along freshly calved ice cliffs that makes it look like bluish in color. Some icebergs looked green, or brown or even black, or combinations of all colors. They usually are rolled over which expose the basal ice or sometimes emerged from below water level. The colors are due to density, air-bubble content and impurities and this picture shows that the black iceberg is of high density and no bubble so dark layers means that there are rock materials inside that came from the base of the parent glacier. Some rocks were even found on the surface of the iceberg and as the ice melts, it will return to marine and lake sediments.

This is only one of the wonders of the world but we must remember that Titanic, the world’s most powerful ship was destroyed due to iceberg (it was not seen by crew as the iceberg is in white colored, how about if it has been a black colored iceberg??) and thousands of people died. So every wonders of the world is good, natural and sometimes hazards to humans. This is not because they meant harm to us, but we human must learn to take good care of them and allow natural events to occur.
