Philippine Bamboo bikes hit the trail. Bamboo bikes, handcrafted by a group of die-hard environmentalists in the Philippines under their “social entrepreneurship” programme, have found their way around the world.

The bikes are made by KawayanTech (Kawayan is a Filipino term for bamboo), a company whose objectives are to develop “indigenous forms of bikes and other alternative means of transport.” These eco-friendly bikes are made by residents in Sitio Pajo in Quezon City and in Lipa City as part of the company’s programme to create employment opportunities for impoverished people.

So far, the company has sold over 80 different kinds of bikes, with prices between US$300 and US$450.
