Filipino Ship Captain appeals guilty over New Zealand’s Oil Spill

New Zealand – Two Filipino sailors, ship captain and second officer pleaded guilty Wednesday causing New Zealand biggest sea oil-spill disaster, officials said.

Cargo ship “Rena” was grounded after it ploughed into a reef last October 5, releasing an oil slick that killed thousands of marine creatures in the Bay of Plenty near Tauranga, New Zealand.

Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) said that both Filipino sailors, appeals guilty over dangerously operating a ship as well as attempting to alter the course of justice by means of records modification.

According to reports, 5,000 volunteers are involved in the massive clean-up in the Bay of Plenty. Ship’s crews are continuing the removal of containers from the wreck to avoid affecting wildlife including whales, dolphins, penguins and seals.
