Former U.S Vice President Cheney gets heart transplant

Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was recovering on Saturday after undertaking a heart transplant at a hospital in Virginia, his spokeswoman said.

Cheney, 71, who remains a prominent figure in the Republican Party, had been on a list for a heart transplant for more than 20 months, said a statement from his spokeswoman Kara Ahern.

In a 2011 interview with NBC News, he said a special pump implanted in his heart in 2010 was “a miracle of modern technology” that had kept him alive but was a “temporary measure.”

According to statement made by his spokeswoman, the former vice president and his family do not know the identity of the donor but, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift.
