Japan took silent for a minute on Sunday to remember the 19,000 people died when massive tsunami ruined into country’s northeast coast last year.

It marks as the first anniversary of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that killed thousands of people and set off a nuclear crisis.

At the national theatre in Tokyo, Akihito and Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda were united by around 1,200 people around the nation smaller-scale ceremonies. Tsunami sirens moaned to mark the moment of disastrous hit.
