A new species of wasp has been discovered in Indonesia last year by entemologist Lynn Kimsey.  She formally published her findings on the bug this week, dubbing it “the Komodo dragon of wasps“.

The insect was discovered in the Mekongga Mountains on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.  It measures 2 1/2 inches long, more than three times the size of an average wasp.  With its mouth open, its jaws are even bigger than its legs.
Kimsey named the insect “Garuda” (“king of birds”), after the Indonesian symbol that is part human, part eagle.  This insect is also known for how its female kind paralyzes other insects, buries them, lay eggs on top of them, making them food for their offspring.
