World’s Second-Tallest Tower: Tokyo Sky Tree opens to the public on May 22

Tokyo Sky Tree developer took visitors up the world’s tallest freestanding broadcast structure on Tuesday, a 634-meter (2,080-foot) tower , will be one of the world’s tallest.

Facilities are Observatory (First Observatory at 350m and Second Observatory at 450m), broadcasting facilities, stores, restaurant, a high-speed elevator, a vertigo-inducing glass floor, and an emergency staircase with 2,523 steps. It was built with special technology meant to withstand earthquakes.

According to owner of Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co., Tokyo Sky Tree is the world’s second-tallest structure. The world’s tallest structure is a 2,717-foot Burj Khalifa located in Dubai.

The tower will open to public on May 22, 2012

The Tokyo Sky Tree has a high-speed elevator, a restaurant and two cafes on the observation decks, a vertigo-inducing glass floor that allows visitors to look straight down, and an emergency staircase with 2,523 steps.

The Sky Tree has been built to stand firm even if a magnitude 7 quake were to strike beneath the building, said Sho Toyoshima, a spokesman for Tobu Tower. He added, the tower sustained no structural damage from the magnitude 9.0 quake that struck off Japan’s northeastern coast last year, even as it was being built.

The Tokyo Sky Tree is expected to strengthen television and radio transmissions in the capital region. Owners also hope it will also become a new tourist destination in Tokyo.

According to tokyo-skytree.jp, tickets for TOKYO SKYTREE are by reservation only with the day/time assigned.

There are 5 ways to purchase tickets to TOKYO SKYTREE Observation Deck.

  1. Online advance reservation of “TOKYO SKYTREE Web Ticket” starts from March 22 (by drawing). Credit cards issued in Japan is required for online reservation.
  2. Advance purchase may be made at Tobu Travel Box Office from March 22 (by drawing).
  3. Tickets from May 22 to July 10 are by Advance Reservation Only. No day tickets will be sold during this period. Day tickets will on sale from July 11.
  4. “TOKYO SKYTREE Group Reservation Center” takes reservations for groups of 25 or more.
  5. Use travel plans of various travel agencies or accommodation plans offered by TOKYO SKYTREE Official hotels/TOKYO SKYTREE Friendship Hotels.
